Day 04 - 09/29 - Canberra - Day 3
We woke up a bit earlier today and after having breakfast, we boarded the now familiar R06 towards downtown. Only today we got off the bus at the Old Bus Depot Markets. We were, however, a bit early and many vendors were still setting up. After a quick preliminary tour we walked down to the Kingston Harbor area with its mega million condominiums. We could have rented an electric party boat for $200A, but we passed on that and bought two tickets on the MV Southern Cross for $15A each (concession rate). Before the cruise started, we had a great chat with the ticket seller about cruising.
The cruise made a couple stops to pick up more passengers and after the second stop we were pretty full. One party of 6 got off at the Yacht Club stop as 'grandma' was on another tour boat and somehow communications got mixed up. But our tour continued on and we got to see many of the sights we had seen from land but now from the water. At one point we got to see the start of the Captain Cook Water Jet. All too soon at 11:30am we were back at the beginning dock.
We walked up to the glass blowing workshop and watched some artistic demonstrations of working with glass and heat. From there we walked across the parking lot and re-toured the Old Bus Depot markets. During our walk around we were interviewed by a news crew from WIN TV and we'll be on TV tomorrow night and on Facebook/YouTube. We enjoyed some caramel corn and Thai street food there. There were also a couple Aussie ladies we shared a table with and had some great conversation.
After lunch we caught a bus to Regatta Point where we toured the Floriade or Australia's celebration of spring. Essentially it was like a giant tulip show with lots of vendors not unlike our state fairs in America. The event was free and very well attended. The big thing we watched were some street entertainers called The Circus Firemen. They were quite good.
To exit the Floriade, we took the double decker Cultural Loop shuttle which took us on a new route back to the Canberra Centre Mall. From there we walked over to the ANU (Australian National University) and found with the help of students the location of the Crossroads Church which met at 6:30pm in Manning Clark Hall inside the Culture Center. It was a very encouraging
Worship Service.
Tomorrow we head to Melbourne for the next part of our adventure.
